EDUCATION:
I Don’t Really Need to Think about This Now, Do I?
By the time you retire, your children should either have graduated
college or be nearing graduation. You may be paying off education
loans for years to come if you did not save enough for their
education while they were still young. Once your children establish
themselves and earn a regular income, ask them to help pay off the
loans if they are financially able to do so.
If you have grandchildren, you may want to start a college fund for
them. You can give up to $10,000 per child annually free of gift tax,
which should be placed in a Uniform Gifts to Minors Act (UGMA)
account in the grandchild’s name. If the child is younger than ten
years of age, invest the money in growth-oriented investments,
such as growth-stock mutual funds. As the child approaches college
age, invest the capital in more conservative assets, such as
growth and income stock mutual funds and bonds.
